Access to toilets can encourage people to use places in my experience.
Community Toilet schemes are one of my current areas of interest. I've been looking at some local authorities who have maps on their website or lists of 'community toilets' but that takes longer to find. Not really helpful for everyone if you are in unfamiliar places and don't know your location in relation to the map.
Some places do great signage - Bishop Stortford's signs are good and Wandsworth, as far as I can see from the web. What would make them better is how far the toilets are from the signpost.
If I have any more inspired thoughts, I'll post again.

Hi Darren
The Hywel Dda Health Trust has won an award for its wayfinding at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest and is an exemplar for its engagement strategy when developing this wayfinding system and also the development of a new renal unit.
Here is a link to an example of the wayfinding http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/862/opendoc/159987 and here is a link to a pdf describing the process. http://www.nhswalesawards.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/documents/1086/Hywel%20Dda%20Health%20Board%20shows%20the%20way!.pdf
As part of the renal unit engagement process, tactile maps were produced so that blind and vision impaired people could have an input in the development of the scheme. The engagement process included all users or potential users of the facility eg hospital consultants, nurses, cleaning staff, service users, security staff, catering staff, Pembrokeshire Access Group, hospital electrical and mechanical services staff who all attended regular meetings to develop the scheme.
Attached are images of the tactile map.
If you would like more info on the renal unit engagement I could let you have a contact.
Regards
Alan

Subject: CASE STUDIES NEEDED - healthy and inclusive places and spaces
Hello all, I am a new subscriber to this discussion list - thanks go to Jane Simpson for pointing me in the right direction!
A bit of background: I trained as an architect and have a PhD in Planning from the University Sheffield where after a break of over 12 years I now teach part-time. I mainly work as a consultant advising on housing, placemaking and community involvement and am a Design Council Cabe BEE and an Academician of the Academy of Urbanism - I am by no means an expert on access! However, I am also the parent of a 8yo daughter with Williams Syndrome so have a personal interest in access and inclusion issues.
In my Cabe capacity I have been tasked with producing some case studies of buildings, spaces and places that are conducive to health and are particularly accessible/inclusive for people with disabilities and it was suggested to me that this may be a good place to get some suggestions of likely candidates......
The projects must be in the UK, as this is where information is lacking online, and have positive outcomes for health/wellbeing/physical activity. We are looking to create a varied range of large to small scale projects potentially covering community led developments, buildings, homes, streets and parks. Health and/or accessibility/inclusion may not have been a key driver at the outset of the project but they should be an outcome - these case studies should in short enable people with various disabilities (and none) o exercise and be healthy. The projects and places covered by the case studies do not need to be new; they can be from any era – and there may well be lessons to learn from environments created in the past.
I just want to wrote-up the best places so that we can spread the word and learn from them. I'd appreciate any suggestions either on here or by emailing me at: [log in to unmask] but my deadline is very tight so ideally over the next couple of days!
