I would suggest that you sit down with your student and take an honest and critical examination of the portfolio of work that she has already created, and ask, is this Sci-Comm or is it lots of things that have science as a theme? And what ages and backgrounds have these projects been targeted at?
For example, she may have created fabulous and ingenious ways to demonstrate phenomena. Or has she shown finely honed writing skills and critical analysis? Or has she sketched some very provocative cartoons about medical issues? Is she a good speaker? Does she make people laugh? Does she love seeing people light up with understanding? What is it exactly that is at the root of the portfolio and the things she loves.
It may be that a vocational path, apprenticeship, business skills will serve her better, and leave her creating and communicating far better than any university degree might offer. Join a model-making studio, be a lab technician, sign up with an engineering company at entry level and work her way up.
Or if she is good at designing and making, perhaps a degree in industrial design might be good. If it is writing, then join up to a journalism degree. Or if it is performance, drama school might be the best route.
Teaching at primary or secondary level might be just what she needs.
Then again, she might have a genuine passion for making new semiconductors, building bridges or sequencing proteins. In which case a solid university degree will serve her better and give her space to think about everything.
You can also discuss with her, if university right now is what she wants or needs. Just because everyone else says that's the thing to do, does not mean she should follow. Maybe she can get a job and study part time later.
Of course, if she would really like to make work about the motivations of science, the reactions of society to science, influencing policy, or the history of discovery, then a science communication degree might be the thing. But, it's probably the last thing she needs.
Best regards
Martyn
