Black Dance Archives project (BDA)
State of Emergency Productions, a national arts company, has received a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to create the first fully accessible archive related to Black Dance in Britain. Working with a number of archive partners, including the Black Cultural Archives, this project aims to collect up to 28 archives from celebrated individuals and organisations operating from 1960s to 2000s. The aim is to preserve, catalogue and make these archives accessible alongside a vibrant and participatory educational programme.
The Black Dance Archives project requires volunteers to support the preservation activities of its collections at the Black Cultural Archives. Volunteers should be able to commit to helping with this project 2 or 3 days a month.
Tasks include:
• Support the BDA Archivists to accession, repackage and list the archive collection in line with best practice, and the policies of Black Cultural Archives
• Undertake digitisation of material on an ongoing basis
• Work with the BDA Archivists to research copyright restrictions and secure permissions
Relevant qualities/experience:
• Ability to work methodically and independently
• Ability to lift and carry boxes up to 10 kilos
• Good attention to detail
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Previous knowledge and experience of using digital technology, particularly scanners and digital cameras
