‘Rags to Riches?: Experiences of Social Mobility Since 1800’, an interdisciplinary research network based at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), is hosting a one day workshop in Oxford on 19th June 2015. We would like to invite researchers at all levels across the social sciences and humanities, and those from outside academia, to submit abstracts for short (10 minute) working papers on new directions in the qualitative study of social mobility.
Social mobility has re-emerged as an important topic in academic research, political policy and protest, and the media which has given rise to a vast array of new ways to think about and analyse it as a social, cultural, economic and lived experience process. The aim of the workshop is to explore these new directions, approaches, studies and research projects being undertaken across the humanities and social sciences on the topic of social mobility. You are encouraged to offer working papers and works-in-progress from across all disciplines, geographies and time periods. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Exploration of downwards social mobility
Interdisciplinary approaches to social mobility
New theories and methods of studying social mobility
Comparative or transnational studies of social mobility
Studies of popular perceptions of and reactions to social mobility
Abstracts of up to 200 words, along with a short CV, should be sent to [log in to unmask] by 30th April 2015. Please note in your proposal if you will need AV.
