Hi Vin
Red and green together should generally always be avoided because when put into greyscale they are indistinguishable. This means that some people with colour blindness will not be able to detect a difference.
The Hywel Dda Health Trust collaborated with people with learning difficulties and RNIB and came up with this idea http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/862/opendoc/159987 for Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest. When converted to greyscale though there is little contrast between the shades of colour they have chosen but the use of text AND symbols seems to be working quite well and the majority of people have said they find it easier to find the right department than before.

Subject: Colour coding for wayfinding
Hi folks,
would really appreciate any thoughts on pros and cons of using colour-coding as part of a wayfinding and signage scheme in a hospital please.
I have already warned that there are substantial numbers of the population, especially males, who have some form of colour blindness.
They are using background colours of green for exit signs, red for emergency unit and blue for general information but then going on to use yellow, orange, purple, pink, brown, white, black and grey for departmental indicators. I know it always sounds like a good idea but in practice is it more help or harm?
Any experience or written guidance [ preferably by impairment organisations rather than commercial companies!] gratefully received.
Regards,
Vin
