Hi everyone-
This semester I'm teaching an undergraduate variation course, and I
have as one of the requirements performing a sociolinguistic
interview. In general, the purpose of these interviews is simply to
learn about the methods that variationists use; since data from such
student interviews will be possibly unreliable, they are not
necessarily being used as data for the final project, but good quality
is better than bad in any case.
I anticipate students asking if they can use their smartphones to
record, and I'd like to allow that even if the quality is not great.
Nevertheless, it would be nice if I could recommend specific apps that
work best for recording speech on smartphones.
So, please let me know if you have any experience with this in any
smartphone ecosystem (Android, iOS, Windows), and any advice you might
have for doing so. Feel free to start a discussion on the list, but I
will summarize all replies I get whether public or private.
Thanks in advance
Scott
