> Background: The Esperanza Window Trap (EWT) baited with CO2
> and human sweat compounds is proficiently attractive to Simulium ochraceum
> s. l. which was the primary onchocerciasis vector in the historically
> largest endemic foci in Mexico and Guatemala, and to S. damnosum s.l., the vector
> in Africa. The EWT has the potential to compete with the human attraction to
> black flies and replace the human landing collection for transmission
> monitoring and surveillance. Here, the capture of S. ochraceum s.l.
> host-seeking females by the EWT placed at schools and households in communities
> (San Jose and Las Golondrinas) from an area with a long-history of
> onchocerciasis transmission in Southern Chiapas Mexico, was evaluated.
>
> Methodology/Principal Findings: At each community, two EWTs per
> household or school collected the black flies for 10 days. The porch or
> kitchen of the households and the backside of the schools served as collection
> sites. Black fly collections were then carried out for additional 10 days in
> the absence of the EWTs. Raw data of the numbers of black flies captured
> per day/trap were analyzed using the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) in
> SAS. There was a significant reduction (P<0.05) in the biting
> rate measured by the human landing collections at the four collection sites
> (combination community/household-school) ranging from 28.3% to 49.7%.
>
> Conclusions/Significance: Taken all results together, it suggests that the EWTs have potential as a
> vector control tool in formerly onchocerciasis communities of the
> Mesoamerican region. Their potential use for integrated vector control in
> Africa is also discussed.

> Dear Aleksandra
> Maybe you will remember me. I am Mario Rodriguez, working on black flies and onchocerciasis in Mexico. Several years ago, I attended an International Black fly symposium in Novi Sad, Serbia where I have the pleasure to met you. Maybe you can recall. I am interested in participating in the workshop of the biology and control of black flies in the coming EMCA meeting of Valencia. I know it is too late to submit the abstract (deadline on December 2014), however, I would like to know if there is still a room for my work in the black fly simposium you are the organizer. I can present the work either a poster or a talk depending on what do you think it fits in the program. If there is no space at all, I would like to be in there anyway as I will be working in Spain for a year (sabbatical) on black flies. I really would like to meet the black fly people here in Spain. I assume most black fly people be in the meeting.
> During the last four years, I was involved in an international project dealing with the development of black fly traps to replace the human landing collections that have been historically used for the monitoring and surveillance of onchocerciasis transmission in America and Africa where it is endemic. The project was granted by the Belinda and Gates Foundation. We have published several papers on the development of these traps (in Plos Neglected Tropical Diseases, PLos One, and Acta Tropica). The latest study we have conducted have not been submitted yet, but we plan to do it soon. This last study is the one that I would like to present in Valencia, if there is still a chance.
> Please let me know what do you think about this idea. I would also appreciate if you could inform me about when is the next ESOVE meeting, and if there will be a session of black flies in the ESOVE meeting. Thank you.

> PS. I am currently collaborating with Luis Triana about black fly DNA barcoding and Charles Brockhouse about full genome and transcriptome black fly projects. I am also still working on black flies and onchocerciasis in Latin America.
