Hi all,
I've recently assumed the editorship of ELR's 'Recent Studies' series
from the irreplaceably well connected Betty Hageman. As you all know,
these Recent Studies surveys are very useful contributions to our field.
I looked at all Recent Studies subjects since vol. 1, and created a
list of some authors/subjects not heretofore covered, or covered but
some time ago and in need of updating. I will be happy to send that
list to anyone interested.
I'm writing the Sidney-Spenser list to solicit suggestions of possible
subjects to cover or, more pressingly, possible contributors. Please
let me know if you or somebody you know might be willing to take on a
Recent Studies survey as a complement to their research. I will be
happy to work closely with anyone to make it seem a less daunting
commission.
I am particularly interested in commissioning updated Recent Studies
surveys of work on Philip Sidney (last covered in 1978) or Mary Sidney
Herbert (last covered 1984). Other possible subjects that come to mind
when looking at the list are Queen Elizabeth (last covered 1993), John
Foxe (1991), or Gascoigne (1973): but there are many others. I would
also welcome volunteers willing to cover such subjects as Digital
Humanities, Sermons, or Rhetoric.
ELR has never covered Spenser in a Recent Studies survey, but I would
certainly consider proposals for a manageably focused subject.
If you would like a reminder of what these surveys look like, I
recommend Katherine Larson's "Recent Studies of Mary Wroth" 44:2
(Spring 2014): 328-59. I will be happy to send a PDF to anyone who
lacks access to ELR.
Please send suggestions about contributors to me directly.
Best,
Joseph Black
