Dear all, I need some advice on sc comm and where best to get it than here? ;)

Among others things I train scientists in in public engagement/dialogue but usually, if I do it privately, I charge per head, about £50 for two half days.

But now I am going to do it with a group of 12 people from a research institution, which will pay for the whole workshop and I can not really ask for £600, it's just too much. How much would you say it's a reasonable price for 2 mornings 9-1pm (a total of 8 hours), 12 people?

I would really appreciate advice as this is tricky one, since I want them to keep employing me for future trainings (although this will never be a regular thing)

Thanks a lot

Catarina

This article on science and climate scepticism - part of a series on
UK climate scepticism by Brendan Montague who's been investigating it
for years - has an interesting ref to media training.

So I thought psci com might be interested/ have views.

What is a "non-academic audience"? When I wrote for the science section of a Dutch newspaper, "academic scientists" told me that they loved this section because it allowed them to keep up with areas of science outside of their own field.

Hello,
I just wanted to add a bump as we are moving *fast* on this role. This is a
great opportunity for someone with strong communications skills and firm
ties to the research community.

As I am part of the hiring team feel free to ask any questions or send your
applications to [log in to unmask] I am quite happy to spend time
answering any queries.

Hello,

This is a great position for a Psci-Commer with good relations in the
academic world and some experience in journalism/communications and
storytelling. The official job title is Community Relations Executive
<http://www.mendeley.com/careers/london-com-rel-executive/>, which tells
you nothing, but the unofficial title is Community Storyteller.

Much of my role involves connecting our developers and product team to
understand more about research and researchers so we can build the tools
needed in academia. I also work closely with the Mendeley Advisor
community, who are a great group of enthusiasts, and help develop
engagement campaigns and events.

My team is great, very supportive, very open about sharing ideas and
duties, so the ideal candidate is really someone who is a "team player," as
our responsibilities are often shared.

The company is also a great place to work, very international, very open.
Still has that "start-up" vibe happening, which is very flexible and fun.

Some further details:

*Position*: Community Relations Executive
*Duties*: Usability Testing, Storytelling, Advisor Program and relationship
building, Partnerships and Outreach.
*Experience and skill set: *Strong communication (written and verbal)
skills; Education or experience in marketing/journalism/communications;
experience with visual storytelling and editing, or a willingness to learn,
Background or familiarity with researchers and the research community a
strong plus.

Strong team collaboration skills; Independent, creative, proactive
thinking; Ability to prioritise and project manage responsibilities;
Positive, friendly, “getting things done” attitude

The contract has a possibility of extension for the right candidate.

Here is the online job spec
<http://www.mendeley.com/careers/london-com-rel-executive/> and I am happy
to provide more details and a longer job spec!

I'm hoping to get some great applications, so really feel free to email me
here or at [log in to unmask]

Thanks!
Shruti.

Thanks Michael,

And thanks to others all advice and support.

Although the editor I am in liaison with hasn’t returned my calls, the article has now been amended to have me as the author. I’m presuming it was the nicely worded email asking for it to be changed. Or the attack dogs.

Consider it a lesson learned in agreeing terms before putting proverbial pen to paper,

This is not unusual.

It is cheeky but I would wait to see how you are paid before kicking up a fuss.

By-lines are important to reporters but in my experience subs often don't care whose name is on a story.

Agencies file vast amounts of copy to nationals without seeing their names on copy.

Also this is not plagiarism. That would be if they had lifted your story and published it elsewhere.

This is what is called by-line banditry. Some reporters get reputations for being bandits - always making sure their name is on the story even if they have done little work on it.

My advice would be that on your next story just say to the news editor that it would be a help if your name appeared on it.

If you are an ABSW member, it can’t match the NUJ for “legals”, but it has many a paid hack. You may find people who have had similar issues.

Have you sent them a large invoice yet? Sadly, they may want to pay in Roubles.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Advice re: National newspaper plagiarism

Dear list members,

I was hoping other science writers might be able to offer some advice or share their experience over current dealings I am having with the Independent on Sunday newspaper.

A little while back I pitched a piece to the Independent about an 'anti-cancer hat' for treating brain tumours in light of some very promising early trial data. They commissioned the piece and were happy with my submission. They had difficulty placing it initially due to space constraints, and so chose to put it in the Independent on Sunday. I have been in contact with the editor and, after I made a few trims, was keen to run it in its entirety.

It was published yesterday under a different author’s name (another freelancer who does shifts for the Independent it seems). It has been edited and shortened, but essentially all the work is mine – no new content has been added. See http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/novottf100a-the-anticancer-hat-giving-hope-to-brain-tumour-patients-10046731.html

They took some of my personal commentary out and placed it separately (under my name) next to the main article. See: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/novottf100-anticancer-hat-its-the-beginning-of-a-new-era-in-the-treatment-of-brain-tumours-10046733.html

As far as I understand it, another journalist has passed off my work as theirs - and not even subtly. As a freelance writer, the portfolio of published work I have is clearly very important. I’m still waiting to hear from the editor, but would like to know if there are any suggestions?

Thanks all,

Stu Farrimond
Science Writer and Communicator

P.s. Should anyone be wanting to see the original piece, for comparison's sake, I can share it.

Economic growth has undoubtedly improved human livelihoods yet has equally convincingly had negative effects on the environment. How will the world cope with the ever-increasing resource demands of developing countries? This debate will bridge developmental and ecological economics with political and environmental science to explore how humanity can manage economic growth and biodiversity conservation.
