HyperUrban.5 :City Temporalities
Fifth International Conference on Hyper Urban Design
University of Florence - Italy, May 28 and 29, 2015
http://hyperurbain.org/hu5/en
HyperUrban conferences propose to reflect on the becoming City, in
communicational, economic, artistic, cultural, philosophical, social,
political and technological terms. HyperUrbain.5 welcomes all
actors involved in city design and management, whether they are
academics, artists, designers, engineers, professionals or industrials...

Call for Papers
Over the past twenty years, more and more European cities develop and
implement policies of city times with a dual goal:
-  Design a planning "time" that organizes the flow of mobility;
- And coordinate access to services schedules.
Beyond the functional aspect (better accessibility and organization of
public services), the times of the city include other dimensions, much
more complex, linking the individual to society and territory.
The call for papers “City Temporalities” is interested in the polysemic
notion of temporality and it asks pluralistic and
multidisciplinary approaches to the sense that this concept takes in the
urban space. Temporality of the city is not only the result of a
historical sedimentation, but relates not only to the fabric of the
city: its design and production, but also to its urban practices: the
city (re)imagined, designed, built, lived, used … by its various
stakeholders.
The actors of the city maintain a dual relation to time:
• Pragmatic, in the sense that every space, every shape, every material
… must express a particular temporality, i.e. temporality of
the architectural project itself. In addition, there are also the user
movements, the flow of people, goods and information, et al.
What characterizes the temporality in the city yesterday and today? How
the temporal dimension is taken into account in urban and
spatial analysis? How is it integrated in the design of an urban
development project? What digital or non-digital tools can integrate or
measure this notion?
• Conceptual: temporality is also a very abstract concept that refers to
multiple questions on meaningful relationships that actors
establish with lived spaces, ie synchronic and / or diachronic
relationships with the site, with its history, with its heritage, etc.
How to define meaningful relationships to urban time? How to objectify
practices from a spatio-temporal point of view?
HyperUrbain.5 solicits contributions about synchronised or distinguished
city times. Different fields (non-exhaustive list) can be exploited:
- Times / temporality of the city
- Diachronic evolution of cities
- Temporality of urban projects
- Temporality of urban forms
- Temporal Semiotics of the city
- Temporal mediation and identity of the city
- Uses and practices temporality / adaptability
- Hybrid Temporality
- A-temporality
- Strategic Approach to Urban temporality
