Dear All,
We are very pleased to announce the second London Medical
Sociology Group seminar of 2015:
Wednesday 25th February - 6-7pm ‘Does IVF Exacerbate Infertility?’
Speaker: Professor Sarah Franklin, University of Cambridge
This presentation returns to the origins of UK IVF in
Oldham, Lancashire to complicate the seemingly obvious relationship
between IVF
and infertility. It also explores how IVF may exacerbate the condition
of
unwanted childlessness it is intended to relieve. Turning to the
present-day, I
will argue that it is only by more fully appreciating the contradictory
and paradoxical
aspects of IVF's history that its future benefits can be maximised.
Discussant: Dr Carrie Friese, London School of Economics
After Dr Friese’s response, we will open up the session for
a general discussion and follow this with a trip to a nearby pub.
Everyone is welcome to attend, so please join us for what
should be a very interesting evening.
