medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
3rd February, Feast of St Blaise:
One of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Believed to be bishop of Sebaste in
Armenia and executed under the Emperor Licinius in the early 4thC. Cult
only known from 8thC, and the Greek and Latin lives are largely
fictitious. These make him the son of rich and noble Christians,
consecrated bishop when very young. During persecution he hid in a cave
where he healed sick and wounded animals. Once a woman brought him her
son who was nearly dead because of a fishbone stuck in his throat,
whence he is invoked for diseases of the throat. The Roman Church still
blesses throats this day with two candles. Believed to have been torn
by two wool combs - which became his emblem and he became the patron of
wool-combers. Canterbury had a relic of him, with records of miracles
at his shrine.
