Hi, All,
The University of Oxford has been carrying out a review of IT support in
its 4 Museums and Botanic Garden.
One of the recommendations is:
"Benchmark IT staff levels against other similar museums in the UK
and beyond in order to make decisions about future investment levels"
So ...
Question 1: Has anyone actually compared IT staffing levels across
Museums in the UK?
Question 2a: If so, are they willing to share their findings?
Or
Question 2b: If not, is anyone willing to share what their ratio of IT
staff to all staff is?
and
Question 3: What is the size of the IT "estate" in terms of hardware,
i.e. computers/interactives/servers/etc, of your institution.
To start the ball rolling, in the Ashmolean (one of Oxford's four
University musuems):
4 IT full-time staff to about 240 all staff (includes about 55 Visitor
Services/Gallery staff, who, although some are part time, all require a
minimum of email support). Of course, some of the other staff are also
part-time, but they still need support, so I don't think a
part-time/full-time distinction is useful. They are all users to us.
In terms of hardware: 200+ desktop/laptops; 10 in-gallery interactives;
about 20 servers (of one sort or another, e.g. web, application, file
stores). All these figures are approximate as they have a habit changing
(especially as Projects come and go)
Any thoughts/numbers/comments/suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks
Jonathan
