Dear colleagues,
the Institute for German Studies (IGS) at the University of Birmingham would like to invite you to its upcoming seminar:
"The Greenest Nation on Trial: German Environmentalism in Perspective"
in co-operation with the Birmingham Seminar for Environmental Humanities (BISEMEH)
Germany enjoys a reputation as an exceptionally green country. It has won international acclaim for its strong Green Party, its influential NGOs, the phasing-out of nuclear power, and its support for renewable energy. Yet how do we write the history of German environmentalism, and what does this history mean for current challenges? Taking a broad view of German environmental history since the 1970s, the panel will explore the merits and pitfalls of various approaches to the topic.
Tuesday 24 February 2015, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. (followed by a wine reception)
Muirhead Tower 417 (Edgbaston Campus)
Panelists:
Frank Uekötter (University of Birmingham), Reader in Environmental Humanities and author of "The Greenest Nation? A New History of German Environmentalism" (MIT Press, 2014).
Silke Mende (University of Tübingen / Centre d’Histoire de Sciences Po, Paris), wrote her PhD thesis on the early years of the West German Green Party.
Axel Goodbody (University of Bath), Professor of German and a leading authority on German environmental literature.
Chair: Nick Martin, IGS Birmingham
ALL WELCOME!
Best regards,
Josefin
