2015 LASG FIELD STUDY AWARDS
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 20, 2015

Applications are invited for the 2015 Latin America Specialty Group Student Field Study Awards. Awards will be made at the PhD level ($600) and the MA/MS level ($300). These awards are intended for graduate student members of the LASG to support preliminary or reconnaissance fieldwork for intended thesis or dissertation research in Latin America. The award is not intended to cover all fieldwork costs, but rather to assist students working toward their Master’s degree to undertake a short period of field research, or to facilitate study site identification and preliminary research for doctoral students undertaking their dissertation research.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Student must be a registered student in a geography department or related discipline or area.

• Regional area of research focus must be within Latin America, including the Caribbean.

• Graduate students working toward an advanced (M.A., M.S., Ph.D.) degree are preferred applicants; in special circumstances, highly qualified undergraduate students may be considered.

• Student must be a member of LASG for the effective year in which s/he applies for award. Join via the AAG website: www.aag.org<http://www.aag.org>.

• Requests for funding to attend academic meetings to present research findings are not covered by these awards; they are intended to support field research.

• LASG Field Study Award recipients for prior years are ineligible for this year’s competition.

GUIDELINES:
Proposals will be evaluated on criteria including—but not limited to—the following:

• Quality of the proposal

• Feasibility of the proposed work

• Other funding sources available to student to support fieldwork. Students can apply to CLAG also. Priority will be given to students who have applied for, but still lack substantial funding for research.

AWARD REVIEW AND NOTIFICATION:
A selection committee will review all applications and make a recommendation to the Committee Chair. Awardees will be notified by March 27, 2015. The award winners will be recognized at the 2015 Business Meeting of the LASG at the AAG Annual Meeting in Chicago, and via email to the successful applicant, and on the LASG website.

REPORTING RESPONSIBILITY:
A 1-2 page final research report describing the awardee’s fieldwork experiences, specifics on how funds were spent, and achievement of objectives is due to the Chairperson of LASG by February 20, 2016.

SUBMISSION:
Submit your entire application via email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> as a single MS Word (doc/docx/.rtf) file. Letters of support should be sent separately, directly from the recommender. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please “save as” 2015FieldYourLastName.doc (or .docx or .rtf).

• Assessment of student’s language proficiency to conduct the fieldwork effectively
• Faculty letter of support should to be sent to the chairperson as an email attachment by the February 20, 2015 deadline. Please “save as” the applicant’s last name for tracking purposes. Email: Subject line should indicate 2015 LASG FIELD STUDY APPLICATION.
