Of course. It's the equivalent of the old adage: 'No one gets sacked for
buying IBM' - but in this case MS. As for re-training, that seems to me
to be a shibboleth. How many times have people had to be retrained
because of changes to the Windows DE and Office (ribbon)? Not only is
local government losing funding, but the country is too - and MS is
(allegedly) a major tax avoider. Many years ago, the Gendarmerie moved to
Linux. Munich has too. The Chinese government is in the next few years.
Most authorities in Spain have their own Linux DE. Russia is the same.
The Phillipines are the same. The world is changing, from the developing
world at the forefront.

Interesting thought but I think there are a number of dynamics against
that happening- not least being the corporate attitude to risk. Breaking
from the herd is fine unless it goes wrong.

Isn't it time that local government, higher education and business caught
up with LibreOffice?

The workshops are repeats of the three successful Excel for Archivists
workshops held in Swindon and Oxford last year. They are aimed at
archivists who already have some knowledge of Excel and explore the
powerful Excel functionality available for working with text, not usually
covered in generic Excel training courses. They focus on using Excel to
list large collections or prepare catalogues for export into Calm or other
systems and the teaching material is based on genuine archive lists and
catalogues.
