Hi,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been doing various space/science talks and so on for several years, mostly at astronomy clubs and so on, mostly this was as part of my PhD/job or off the bat because I enjoy doing them. I'm not getting the stage where I can ask for a speakers fee (I've been asked a couple of times if I have one), but there are quite a few things I'd really like some advice on.
-What kind of price is it reasonable to charge. I don't want to undervalue myself, but I'm also worried about overcharging.
-At what point to you raise the issue of a fee. Should it be in the initial email feeling our a potential talk?
-Is there any advice anywhere about the legal/tax implications of doing this kind of thing on top of my job.
I'm in the process of trying to get into various freelance strands, so that last one is a very general question (incidentally, if anyone needs a freelance astronomy writer... hi!).
Thanks for any help or advice. It's much appreciated.
Best,
Ezzy Pearson
