Head of ROH Collections
£44,000 per annum (permanent, full-time contract)
The Royal Opera House is the major lyric arts theatre in the United Kingdom, enjoying an international reputation for excellence. The Royal Opera House Collections contain materials covering the history of the three theatres that have stood on the site since 1732.
We are now seeking to appoint an experienced Head of Collections to lead our team.
Reporting to the Director of Learning and Participation, responsibilities will include:
- Short and long term planning to achieve the successful development and management of the Collections in line with the ROH Plan and Learning and Participation strategy.
- Team management with line management responsibility for staff and volunteers.
- Developing and implementing a new Acquisition Policy to ensure the history of ROH is documented accurately and comprehensively.
- Ensuring long term care of the Collections through the development and implementation of Collections Management and Preservation policies.
- Widening public engagement with the Collections for researchers and the general public through digitization, interpretation and participation activities.
- Providing access to the Collections for ROH staff to support the business.
- Leading financial management of the department.
- Overseeing the care of the heritage building at Covent Garden.
- Acting as an advocate for ROH Collections internally and externally.
The successful candidate will hold a Masters level qualification in Archives and Records Management and be able to demonstrate:
- Significant and demonstrable experience in senior management, leading a Collection, preferably a special collection, and high level understanding of professional good practice in Collections management.
- Outstanding people and relationship building skills with a track record of line management – developing and nurturing talent.
- Understanding of role of digital in a 21st century collection and a proven track record in digitization and innovative Public Engagement initiatives.
- Excellent strategic planning and business management skills with evidence of strong project planning, organizational and team management skills and a track record of delivering large scale change programmes within budget and timeline.
- Experience of developing policies and implementing procedures to strengthen Collections.
