PenCLAHRC Senior Research Fellow in Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
University of Exeter Medical School
The School wishes to recruit a Senior Research Fellow to lead the delivery of PPI within the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for the South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC). The successful applicant will be responsible for embedding meaningful PPI in all PenCLAHRC activities and contributing to the evidence base in this expanding field. This PenCLAHRC funded post is available immediately, with funding currently available until 31st December 2018 but it is hoped further funding will be secured beyond this date. The starting salary will be from £40,847 up to £54,841 on Grade G, depending on qualifications and experience. The post includes generous holiday allowances, flexible working, a pension scheme and relocation package (if applicable)
NIHR CLAHRCs undertake high-quality applied health research focused on the needs of patients and support the translation of research evidence into practice in the NHS. CLAHRCs were first established in 2008 and are now firmly embedded within the NIHR Infrastructure. PenCLAHRC, one of the original pilot CLAHRCs, is now in its sixth year of operation having recently secured a second 5-year round of NIHR funding. In large part, the attainment of continued funding is attributable to the 'engagement by design' model adopted by PenCLAHRC whereby local patients, members of the public and carers are considered essential to the development and conduct of research. The PenCLAHRC PPI Team is pivotal in this process and has recently expanded in size in order to reflect this growing commitment.
The post holder will lead our well supported and highly valued PPI team who have made, and continue to make, a major contribution to the work of PenCLAHRC. Working with our longstanding and active Peninsula Patient Involvement Group (PenPIG), the team has a strong track record of delivering PPI and of contributing to the literature on PPI. It also hosted a highly successful international PPI conference in Exeter in 2013.
The successful applicant will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or equivalent qualification in a related field of study and will be a nationally recognised authority in PPI or Community Engagement. They will possess an in-depth understanding of PPI to enable the development of new knowledge and understanding within the field. As a generic expectation at this level, applicants will be able to contribute to the development of research strategies; participate in the overall management of the School in areas such as strategic planning, budget management and business planning; plan and deliver research, consultancy or similar programmes and actively seek and secure research funding. In addition, the successful applicant will provide academic leadership to research teams, lead and develop internal and external networks and develop links with external contacts in order to foster collaboration and generate income. Applicants will possess sufficient specialist knowledge about PPI to develop research strategies, programmes and methodologies and will have the requisite interpersonal skills to effectively deliver meaningful PPI. They will also have a solid record of research output in peer reviewed publications, including papers within the field.
