Dear colleagues,
On the 1st January 2015, the second phase of implementing the 20 Year Rule for transfer of records under the Public Records Act came into effect.
This means that the specified creating bodies in the Second Schedule (magistrates’ courts, prisons, coroners’ courts, NHS bodies and some arms-length bodies including the Environment Agency) are now obliged to transfer records selected for permanent preservation to a Place of Deposit at twenty years, rather than the previous thirty years, subject to transitional provisions.
Under the new arrangements, creating bodies will be provided with training and guidance on the standards expected in advance of the transfer of records.
The National Archives will be running a series of training sessions across England and Wales for staff in the creating bodies from the end of this month, and we are developing e-learning modules which will be made available to the creating bodies over the course of 2015.
Training sessions will be run in the following locations between January and April 2015: London, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Cambridge, Exeter, Birmingham, Aberystwyth and Cardiff .
