medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
St Agnes 21st January
Today is the feast of the early Roman Virgin martyr Agnes (c.305). He3r
cult is attested in the "Depositio Martyrum" of 354 and a basilica was
built over her grave in the Via Nomentana. She is one of the best known
of the early Roman martyrs, the feast being widely kept in East and
West.
There are 5thC. Acts which made her to be a girl of only 13 who,
because of her dedication to Christ, refused marriage and preferred
death to violation of her virginity. She was killed by being stabbed
through the throat. Given the similarity of her name to 'agnus' (lamb)
a lamb has been her emblem, first seen in the mosaics at St Apollinare
Nuovo at Ravenna of the 6thC. You can see an image of this mosaic by Fr
