Dear Museum Computer Group,

another museum related PhD studentship opportunity is now open for applications.

The studentship is located at UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, sponsored by Phillips and EPSRC as iCase studentship, and in collaboration with the British Museum.

Thank you for passing this on to interested parties!

Application guidelines and description can be found her: https://atsv7.wcn.co.uk/search_engine/jobs.cgi?owner=5041178&ownertype=fair&jcode=1449593

PhD Studentship Appearance of Objects in Museums under LED Illumination , - Ref:1449593

UCL Department / Division: Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering

Stipend: £15,863 per annum plus fees

Applicants are sought for an exciting EPSRC iCASE PhD studentship<http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/coll/icase/intro/> with UCL Engineering and Philips in partnership with the British Museum. The project is driven by Philips who wish to enhance their understanding of the influence of illumination from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on human colour perception and how this affects the display of objects in museums.

Studentship Description: The project will investigate methods of synthesising light of specific spectral power distributions, ranging from incandescent to various modes of daylight. The impact of illumination by these spectra on fading, material stability, and on the perception of artefacts will be explored. The research programme will examine more fundamental behaviour of the human visual system, including chromatic adaptation and colour rendering, with the aim of developing a new mathematical model of colour appearance in complex artefacts. The investigation will also examine how much the preferred colour rendering of artefacts varies with the age of the observer. The work will make use of a new large configurable lighting space being developed by UCL in East London for 2016 as part of its new Olympic Park Campus. Travel to the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven is also envisaged.

Person Specification: Applicants should have an honours degree (first/upper second) in engineering, physics or computer science, experimental psychology, human technology interaction, or equivalent industrial experience. A masters degree in a relevant subject would be an advantage. Specific experience in one or more of the following is desirable: visual perception, psychophysical experimentation, data analysis, statistics, colour science, image processing, or material science.

Eligibility: Applications are invited from UK and EU members, residing in UK. Applicants must meet the EPSRC eligibility requirements which can be found here<http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm>.

Start Date: The post will be available from February 2015.

Application Procedure:

Applicants should send a covering letter and CV to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

The successful applicant will then have to apply online to UCL by submitting the PhD application form, available from http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study/application-admission/apply-online/ , entering Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) as the department and naming Prof Stuart Robson as the proposed supervisor.
