Hi all,
Thanks Andrew for the plug for our information on collections & digital systems.
The link to Doug Russell's really useful survey (which is broader than CollMS/DAMS and includes POS, ticketing and customer relationship management systems) is in his original email via MCN, which I include below:
"I created a survey to poll people about what software is used in your organization. I've broken it into retail shop POS, Ticketing/Membership POS, Collections management, DAMS (Digital Asset Management) and CRM (customer/membership/donations management).
Please take the survey here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/H7M5SNN
Please denote whether you are 1) Pleased 2) Content or 3) Dissatisfied.
Also note if you are looking for a new product (marked as "Exploring" in the results spreadsheet. Unfortunately I haven't received enough responses yet to get a good statistical sample.
Current results are posted here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bjtHUp6Oi1_eKcXjmrRgoQ0DoPP0tIahit9ielilOUU/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true
The exploring column is not computed in the totals.
Thanks,
Douglas Russell

Hi Pam and welcome.
There's a big list of possibles on the Collections Trust site:
http://www.collectionstrust.org.uk/suppliers just info though, not comparison or advice
This page has an attempt at comparing features:
http://www.collectionstrust.org.uk/choose-a-cms
I can't find it now, but over on the MCN list there was a great Google doc comparing loads of Collections Management Systems too.

Subject: Putting a collection online
Hi,
I have just joined the group and hope that I can get some advice for a project I am working on.
I am working for a client cataloguing a private family collection, mainly of visual material. There are also archives which have been catalogued separately.
The owner would like all this information to be available online and I wondered if anyone could advise me as to which would be the best collections management system to use to link to a website and in particular a wordpress site.
As it is a small collection I thought Modes Complete would probably be best but I've heard that this doesn't work well with images online. I would hope to be able to do the work myself so am looking for the most straighforward option.
Thank you in advance.
Pam

I don't know what you've heard, but Modes Complete works perfectly well with images online. Perhaps you would like to contact me off list to discuss this further?

Hi Pam
WordPress is a really good front-end choice, and you've have lots and lots of flexibility, but you'll almost definitely need to get your hand dirty with theme development, coding, etc. There are some previous threads on here about this stuff, so worth going back and digging through the MCG JiscMail archive.
If not WP then there are some tools like CollectionsSpace which is gaining a lot of ground - open source, free, but again I'm pretty sure you'll need to know your geekery - it's built in Java (oh god) but a great solution apart from that - http://www.collectionspace.org/
Loads and loads of other possible options - I suspect it'll come down to budget and what you mean by "small collection". I would suggest pretty strongly though that you avoid the "click and go" options from the collections management vendors. I think without exception they're pretty awful. Easy, yes, but awful - terribly ugly, bad for Google, inflexible, lazy.
Misc other thoughts:
- if no budget / really small collection then forget about the CM system and use WP to do it for you (look at "custom fields", in particular the "ACF" plugin)
- we have a plugin which pulls in CG / AdLib (soon KE Emu too) data to WordPress, but it's still in beta - http://cultureobject.co.uk/
- use CultureGrid whatever you do!
I think there's a big chunk of "it depends" here. Happy to talk offline if you need, just ping me an email.
Mike

Hi Pam
I’d strongly suggest Omeka (http://omeka.org/ <http://omeka.org/>), which is free and powerful, and which like Wordpress can either be locally installed for free or used as an at-cost hosted service. To save fuss you could try the free ‘Basic’ hosted plan by signing up here - http://www.omeka.net/ <http://www.omeka.net/> - to see if it fits your requirements. If you’re not a developer then it is going to be considerably easier to set up Omeka for basic cataloguing than it will be to bend Wordpress to your will. On the other hand you can easily enough make Omeka ‘talk' to Wordpress if you need to. Ultimately though Omeka - like Wordpress - was designed to serve the need you have...so for that reason alone I’d say it’s worth a look.
Best wishes

Hello all,
Have you had a good experience working with a digital agency?
I'm working with a small educational charity looking to re-design its website (budget £10-15K) and would be grateful to hear about any agencies delivering engaging creative work in the museum, cultural, educational sectors.
Many thanks,
