Load2Learn actually signed the Pearson agreement form on our behalf, while=
the other publishers requested no signature or declaration.
Before we provide the PDF to the student, we attach a cover sheet/disclaime=
r with 'terms of use' in line with the legal provisions the restrictions g=
enerally imposed by the publishers. (created with the assistance of Ben & C=
hris at Kent and attached)
Please feel free to use the cover sheet or amend it as you wish to suit you=
r purposes.

Hi all
Contacting individual publishers for cds, single and multiple pdfs of alter=
native format books for disabled students is part of what I do at Warwick.
Over the past 3 years I've requested 173 alternative formats, 46 of which p=
ublishers haven't been able to provide as they have been old books.
On the whole the publishers do provide the files, but as already mentioned =
the process is time consuming.
Can anyone tell me how their university approaches the copyright issue, i.e=
. signing the publisher T & Cs and making sure that the student adheres to =
them?

Hello,
As part of the digitisation service we provide to students with special nee=
ds we have been contacting publishers over the past 5 years or so and have =
received PDFs for free whenever the publisher had them available. We would =
only request publishers PDFs or Word documents for books that we have avail=
able in the Library.
As Susie Hastie mentions on her message this process takes quite some time.
Last semester we had very good results with Bloomsbury, Sage, Routledge, Ca=
mbridge University Press, Intellect Books, McGraw-Hill Education, Pan Macmi=
llan, Quercus Books.
Some of them sent us CDs, the PDF via email or the FTP link.
We also contacted a few publishing houses that never replied to us.
Last semester we purchased a PDF from Hodder & Stoughton publishers as they=
clearly told us we could not scan the book in house to provide it to one o=
f our students with special needs.
The Open University Press also replied to one of our requests telling us to=
purchase the PDF from their online shop.
Regarding electronic resources, some of our students with special needs hav=
e reported finding difficult to navigate through so on occasions we had to =
digitise electronic resources for those students.
Last semester we had a particular high number of requests and a result we w=
ill be investigating options such as Load2learn. I would also like to know =
more about how other institutions deal with requests from students with spe=
cial needs ... so should be contacting you soon!

required we complete their specific form providing further details on the s=
pecific student, course, etc.

In reading through the impact assessment<https://www.gov.uk/government/uplo=

the proposed transfer of funding for DSAs from central government to Unive=
rsities, I came across the following statement (Para. 53);
Many publishers have agreed to make alternative formats of their publicatio=
ns available to disabled students, online and at no cost. We wish to see th=
is facility used widely and routinely.
Has anyone come across this, as it seems contrary to the ethos of most acad=
emic publishers!
