Panel on New media in the feminist classroom: Online resources for teaching feminist geography
At the meeting of the IGU Commission on Gender and Geography, April 2015
As professors in the 21st century, we interact constantly with and through the internet: we use it to inspire our research, explore new ideas, help prepare for our classes, and communicate with others. For many of us, new media has provided a wealth of possibilities for innovative and engaging ways to teach students content (including social media, databases, images, case studies, videos, curricula, podcasts, etc.). For others of us, the prospect of finding appropriate online resources that would appeal to our students and help to teach content in feminist geography is an overwhelming task, and as a result, we continue to use teaching methods and resources that are more comfortable to us.
We are seeking participants for a panel session on using new media and online resources to teach feminist/gender geography in effective and innovative ways. We hope to use this session to bring together both those of us who both have a lot of experience incorporating online resources into teaching, as well as those of us who have thus far avoided this practice, in order to provide an opportunity for inspiration and information sharing. We are particularly interested in learning hearing people’s experiences regarding ways that online resources have served to enhance students’ understanding of feminist geography. In particular, we seek contributors who can address the following questions:
- How have new media and online resources helped you teach feminist geography (both in the context of feminist geography classes, as well as in other classes)?
- What online resources do you currently use in your classroom?
- What online resources would you like to see available?
- What challenges have you faced using new media and online resources to teach feminist content?
- What has kept you from incorporating new media into your classroom?
We envision this session as not only being useful in expanding the teaching possibilities for the session participants, but also we (as session organizers) hope to document the ideas presented in this session in order to help compile an online resource for teaching feminist geography in the coming year.
The panel will involve short (5-10 minute) presentations from each panelist, followed by open discussion. If you are interested in participating, please email Risa Whitson ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) with a brief description what your contribution will be.
