PhD Studentship: An exploratory study of growing up with a genetic disease

Supervisors Prof Joanna Latimer & Dr Tom Hall

Applications are being sought for a prestigious, full time ESRC Wales DTC PhD Studentship in to be based in the Cardiff School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, to begin in October 2015.

The proposed study seeks to provide insight into how young people experience genetic diagnostic processes and the ways in which living with a genetic disorder with unusual features affects 'growing' up, identity-work and belonging. The research will build upon earlier research on diagnosis of children with genetic disorders, some of which are marked by 'dysmorphic' features. For a young person growing up with such a syndrome there are a number of challenges to identity and sense of self, including stigma as well as social exclusion. While there is proliferating research that focuses on families' experiences of genetic clinical process, very little research has focussed on children's experience, especially on their experiences in adolescence, from a socio-cultural perspective. While you will be given a great deal of room to develop yourown research design the expectation is that the study will be exploratory, drawing on ethnographic methods, including developing a methodology for enabling young people's participation in the research. The broad aim is to

explore how living with a genetic disorder affects growing up, including exploration of the meaning a genetic diagnosis has for young people as well as how bodily features as well as biological relatedness, affects identity and sense of self.
