Closing date: 29 May 2015
Awards will be made on the basis of academic excellence and potential for future achievement as demonstrated by your application and supporting references. The Scholarships provide support for PhD studies for a duration of 3 to 3.5 years and include a waiver of tuition fees (partial fee waiver for overseas students), a student maintenance grant and a training bursary.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact relevant academics before applying to discuss interests and potential topics. The following staff are actively seeking students in HCI:
Dr. Jason Alexander, Physical Computing and Shape-Changing Interfaces ([log in to unmask]): I am interested in recruiting students in all aspects of Physical Computing, and especially those interested in shape-changing (physically-dynamic) displays. Topics include prototyping non-rigid displays, examining their application domains, developing new methodologies and tools for their content creation, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of interaction techniques.
Dr. Keith Cheverst, Mobile Interaction Design ([log in to unmask]): I am interested in recruiting students in all aspects of Mobile Interaction Design, and especially those interested in locative media, user centered design and 'research in the wild' studies.
Dr. Abhijit Karnik, Novel Display Techniques and Physical Computing ([log in to unmask]): Interested students should be willing to work in one of the following areas of interest: 3D displays (head-worn, multi-user, multi-view, varifocal, practical AR and VR; design and prototyping); physicalized and deformable displays; design, implementation and evaluation for impact on performance and usability; investigating relevant interaction techniques (gestural and haptic).
Dr. Adrian Friday ([log in to unmask]) and Dr. Mike Hazas ([log in to unmask]), Socio-Digital Sustainability: We have an established track record in sustainable HCI, interrogating the relationship between everyday practices (like cooking or staying warm), and energy demand and environmental impacts. Our work is distinguished by its qualitative and quantitative accounts, and by its fresh perspectives brought by multidisciplinary engagement (e.g. sociology, buildings research). We seek PhD students passionate about exploring how everyday life can be made more sustainable and meaningful.
Prof. Jon Whittle, Social Computing and Digital Health ([log in to unmask]): For students interested in digital technologies that promote social change, quantified self and personal informatics (especially novel bio-sensors for promoting health and well-being), big data and internet of things. For example projects, see www.catalystproject.org.uk, www.myliferocket.com and www.heartlink.co.uk
Applications close 29 May 2015. Full details can be found at: http://www.scc.lancs.ac.uk/phd/Studentships
