Workshop: 19 April 2015
A growing trend in HCI is the adaptation and personalization of interactive applications and devices. This trend is expected to continue further into the era Internet of Things (IoT) and Quantified Self, where applications need to address deeply contextualized user needs. This brings about a transformation to the role of the user to that of End-User Developer, who assumes an increasing number of responsibilities traditionally intended for developers and professional programmers. This workshop aims to identify the grand challenges that the field of end-user development (EUD) should pursue in the next 10 years.
This one-day workshop will bring together participants from various backgrounds, such as: End-User Development, Internet of Things, Quantified Self, Ambient Intelligence and Mashups. Participants can get hands-on experience with EUD environments brought to the workshop by participants and organizers. These environments will be used as a basis for discussions on the role that EUD can play in the Internet of Things era. Selected contributions will be considered for a special issue.
We invite researchers and practitioners to discuss what the impact of the Internet of Things era is on End-User Development, and how EUD methods, tools and frameworks can be leveraged to benefit IoT research and practice. Potential participants submit a 2-4 page position paper, directly or indirectly addressing the topic and goals of this workshop. Everyone is asked to include a description of their work and its relation to the workshop theme. Participants are also warmly invited (but not obliged) to bring along a demonstrable version of EUD applications they have created, for use in the workshop.
Please indicate whether you are planning on bringing a demonstrator, and which of the position paper authors will attend the workshop. At least one author from each accepted paper must register for the workshop and at least one day of the conference.
