Good morning all! Not that I see much 'good' about it...

I don't tweet. And I'm a Hungarian and of Jewish parentage, hence a mixture
of the many peoples (including Africa, from Africans in the
conquering/ruling Ottoman armies) .... So I cant be of much use except as a
supporter....

Colleagues,

Is anyone else sick to death of hearing so-called allies talk about 'race
equality'? I'm uninterested in equalising anything between or among the
'races', because there are no 'races'.

Similarly, I'm uninterested in improving relations between or among the
'races', because there are no 'races'. In this year, the fiftieth
anniversary of the UK's first ever Race Relations Act, it is incumbent upon
us, as scholars, to explain to our society that those several Acts failed -
yes FAILED - precisely because they completely misconceived the nature of
unjust racialised hierarchy.

This year is a crux - certainly for the reasons Dr Rollock has helpfully
mentioned and also because the 'International Decade for People of African
Descent', declared by the United Nations, commenced on 1st January 2015 (it
will last until 31st December 2024). If we mean business, and if we really
want to effect any improvement in our racialised social world, let us not
pussy-foot around injustice. Away with 'race equality' and 'race relations'.
Eschew them. Let us call it what it is and let us lead our society to call
it what it is. It is White Domination. Our collective aim is to Dismantle
White Domination. #raceinHE2015

Hi Nicola,

Well said. I'll tweet some stuff. If you're interested, there is an article
by me on this subject in Race Equality Teaching (Spring, 2008) for which I'm
still get some bad looks.

Don't weaken,

Malcolm

Dearest all

We academics return to a busy term of teaching, marking and exam prep and,
if we are fortunate, we may be able to etch out some time to research and
write.

There will be several important reports and activities announced or
published this year about race in Higher Education. I have long been of the
view (I know shared by some of you) that the issues we face in HE are often
invisible although the appalling statistics speak for themselves. I refer
not only to the experiences of racially minoritised students but, crucially,
of racially minoritised academics.

I am hoping to galvanise some momentum around these issues. Rather than
being viewed as individual accounts or reports, these need to be understood
as a collective atrocity/absence. If you are active on twitter, I would
like to urge you to use the hashtag #raceinHE2015 about items you post
around race, racism, universities and higher education more generally.
Hopefully we can get this trending and get broader conversation going about
the subject.

With my thanks and in strength

Nicola
