Abstract
This talk will focus on Professor Göran Malmqvist’s experiences as a translator, mainly of Chinese literary works (Ancient, Medieval, Modern and Contemporary) into Swedish, and Contemporary Swedish poetry into English.
Biography
Göran Malmqvist is an Emeritus Professor in Sinology, Stockholm University; a Member of the Swedish Academy and an Honorary Fellow at SOAS.
He gained a BA in Chinese, Latin, Anthropology from Stockholm University in 1948 and carried out fieldwork in China under a Rockefeller Fellowship in 1948-50. In 1951, he was awarded a PhD in Chinese Studies from Stockholm University.
Göran Malmqvist has held the following posts: Lecturer in Chinese at SOAS, 1953-55; Cultural Attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Peking, 1956-58; Senior Lecturer, Canberra University College, 1959-60; Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University, 1961-65 and Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Asian Studies at Stockholm University, 1965-1990.
Publications in wide fields of Chinese Studies (dialectology, phonetics and phonology, ancient and modern syntax, metrics); translations of some 50 volumes of Chinese literature (Ancient, Medieval, pre-Modern, Modern and Contemporary).
