Title: Economic development and the environment in China: Do intra-country pollution haven and dirty industry migration exist?
Abstract: In the last 3 decades, China’s dramatic economic development has led to environmental degradation and threats to its climate, public health and sustainable development. This project therefore examines the economy/environment relationship, explores the environmental effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) and verifies the industrial migration pattern within China. And it further splits the environmental effect of economic development into scale, composition, and technical effects. In the study of the intra-country pollution haven hypothesis, the environmental impact of FDI is examined by considering the potential differences caused by different motivations and source countries. This project also provides frontier research on dirty industry migration within China, using a quantitative method.
Speaker: Zhiyi is a first year PhD student in the school of Contemporary Chinese study. Her research is about the relationship between economy and environment in China.
