Hi Lee,

The finish is very impressive and it's great that you're developing a product that can be retro-fitted. It's great to see contrast being considered too. I wonder if you have any feedback from your customers why they don't want wider strips? It seems to me that using just one wide strip defines the edge better and would be easier to see but it may be that they have experience otherwise, or is it just for aesthetic reasons?

Kind regards,

Claire

Hi All

Been very interesting reading everyone’s comments,

We have for the last 15 years been applying our anti-slip resins direct to stair treads & risers for all types of surfaces including ceramic tiles, marble, timber, glass to name a few. Over the years only a hand full of customers have asked for the top and bottom treads to be in different colours to the other treads. 9 times out of 10 our customers also do not want large thick 55 mm wide strips to the tread and riser or want the pre-formed nosing’s. We are always asked to provide various strips widths for example the most popular finish is 3 number 10mm strips with 10mm gaps between. As our product is gun applied this process can be varied into any finish with any number of strips and in any size and also any RAL colour can be achieved. Sometimes we are even asked to provide finishes in squares or circles.

I have attached an example of our resin applied to concrete, 3 strips to the tread and 2 strips to the riser, this was applied to a school in London.

Would be interesting to have comments from any access officers on this type of layout.

I look forward to hearing from any of you

Regards

Will the revised code still include the illustration showing yellow nosing top and bottom (and intermediate)?

The DfT are updating the guide in line with the new PRM TSI (European guidelines) . As part of that I am going to get them a picture of all yellow stair nosings, which do work best in an environment where they get a lot of wear , dirt covered etc.

Actually what would be really good is if someone could come up with an invention that could easily clean these as that is the hardest problem as they are also antislip as well and so the dirt gets into the flat areas and only hard scrubbing with a jet washer evens comes close to getting it clean. It would need to be some kind of handheld device that could be used when people are around and was light enough for someone to carry.

Example of clean and dirty steps attached!

Hi Ryan

Thank you for your comments
Do you know whether the DfT Accessible Train Station Design for Disabled People: A Code of Practice is due to be revised?
I was led to believe that DfT Access for All project team was looking at visual contrast on stairs for the revision of the code?

Hi

It seems to have been common practice in the transport industry to have the top and bottom stair nosing in yellow and the rest white.
However I have not seen any research that backs that up but have seen / heard feedback from visually impaired ( and non) who both don’t understand why it is done and do find it confusing, sometimes missing their footing as they thought they had arrived at the end of the flight of stairs when in fact they still had a step to go.
The only explanation I have heard for doing it is so that people can see there where there are landings or the end of the steps are - but that was from someone fitting them rather than a person using them!

A bit like tactiles really, in my experience although visually impaired are aware they are there and that they mean a hazard ( although not all knew that ) the many different types are lost on most of them!

For the last few years, I have moved to insisting that all nosings are yellow as they stay much more visible (especially compared to white nosings) even when dirty and as I have always found with yellow it contrasts well with most other colours, even lighter ones, and it ensures there is no confusion about whether or not someone has reached the last step in a flight.

Subject: TOP AND BOTTOM STAIR NOSINGS A DIFFERENT COLOUR TO THE REST

I have posted several times regarding this subject and would appreciate any updates or comments please The practice of highlighting the top and bottom stair nosings in a different colour to the rest seems to be gaining momentum.
Is anybody aware of any research to back up this practice?
Does anybody support this practice?
I would appreciate any comments please
Thank you
