On behalf of Rebekah Higgitt¹s recent query:
I found this in my notes of the correspondence of Henry Bence Jones to
Emil du Bois-Reymond, 28 May 1854, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Preußischer
Kulturbesitz, Handschriftenabteilung, SD 3k 1852 (3), Bl. 182-183.
The letter discusses the succession of John Wrottesley to William Parsons
as President of the Royal Society. Bence Jones wrote that the objections
to Lord Wrottesley weren¹t scientific but rather ³that he would not feed
the society with ices & cake as Lord Rosse had done at his soirées.² Bence
Jones added that some of us hope that ³instead of looking for Lords we
shall take the best scientific men.²
