MA in Global Urban Justice (starting 2015-16):
Cities are not only becoming dynamic centres of economic growth and development but also crucibles of political action and contestation around diverse aspects of social, environmental and spatial justice. This will become even more relevant over time with around 70 per cent of the world’s population expected to live in cities by 2050. In cities and regions across the world, we now face multiple challenges of climate change, migration and citizenship that threaten our very social and ecological sustainability.
The MA in Global Urban Justice (GUJ), which is an ESRC-recognized pathway to PhD qualification, is a unique postgraduate programme that combines cutting-edge theoretical and methodological training with ‘real-world’ experience of working with civil society organizations and campaign groups. It aims to meet a growing demand for interdisciplinary knowledge and expertise in the challenges of contemporary urbanization and social justice in cities and regions around the world.
If you are interested in becoming part of a new generation of urban practitioners who are theoretically informed, methodologically proficient and empirically grounded, and who can work across disciplinary divides to create more just, sustainable and inclusive urban environments, then this course is for you.
The course offers:
• ‘Real-world’ experiences through dedicated placements with established external partners, in the third sector (voluntary, charity, think tanks, NGOs) organizations.
• Introduction to the core concepts and debates around urban justice and injustice across the global north and south with genuine broad coverage.
• Interdisciplinary and critical engagement with contemporary urbanization in the global north and south to create more just, equitable and sustainable urban futures.
• Advanced training in qualitative, quantitative and action research methods offering students an excellent pathway to employment or doctoral study.
• Opportunity to explore cutting edge themes in global urban justice through modules associated with the School’s research clusters on ‘Citizenship and Belonging’ and ‘Cities and Social Justice’.
