POSTS 1 and 2:

Senior Research Assistant/Research Fellows (University of Southampton)

Location: Highfield Campus
Salary: £28,695 to £33,242
Full Time Fixed Term For 2 Years
Closing Date: Friday 16 January 2015
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 498214WR

We are seeking to appoint two researchers to undertake research in accordance with the Clinton Health Access Initiative subcontract that funds analyses of population and malaria mobility in Southern Africa and Southeast Asia. Many countries in the Southern Africa and Southeast Asia region have seen substantial recent success in controlling malaria and are now planning for elimination of the disease. This requires a strong evidence base to guide and support elimination strategic planning, including transmission risk maps, spatiotemporal data on human mobility and the translation of these into estimates of parasite flows in the region.

Working under the supervision of Dr Andrew Tatem and in close collaboration with national malaria control programs and the Clinton Health Access Initiative, you will work on the assembly, processing and analysis of these malaria and mobility data for the Southern Africa and Southeast Asia regions. Moreover, you will construct and develop spatiotemporal models of malaria connectivity and mobility to support strategic planning and surveillance efforts. You will have strong quantitative abilities, with ideally experience of working on malaria risk mapping, human mobility data and models, and disease transmission models.

You will:
-Contribute to work on the design and development of approaches for modelling population and malaria movements from a range of spatial datasets.
-Undertake the integration of movement datasets and models with existing population distribution datasets.
-Provide support to malaria control programs on malaria risk and incidence mapping, and the integration of human and parasite mobility estimates to inform the design of malaria elimination strategies.
-Regularly disseminate findings by contributing to the preparation of publication materials for referred journals, presenting results at conferences, or exhibiting work at other appropriate events.

You will have either a PhD/MSc in a computational/quantitative discipline, or relevant industry experience and a willingness to travel overseas occasionally to visit national malaria control programs and for other overseas meetings.

The positions are available from 5 January 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Andrew Tatem via [log in to unmask]
The closing date for this vacancy is 16 January 2015.

Application procedure:
You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you require any assistance, please contact Charlene Tyson on +44 (0) 23 8059 6803. Please quote reference 498214WR on all correspondence.

POST 3:

Senior Research Assistant/Research Fellow (University of Southampton)

Location: Highfield Campus
Salary: £28,695 to £32,277
Full Time Fixed Term For 1 Year
Closing Date: Monday 19 January 2015
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 499414WR

We are seeking to appoint a researcher to undertake research in accordance with a Flowminder Foundation and UN Foundation project on mapping women’s welfare at high spatial resolution. Women’s welfare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) frequently display larger differences within than between countries. However current national data collection methods provide only a coarse understanding of these differences, limiting the application of interventions to target areas where most of the vulnerable women are located.

Under the supervision of Dr Andrew Tatem and in close collaboration with other researchers within the WorldPop project (www.worldpop.org.uk) and Flowminder Foundation (www.flowminder.org), you will work on the production of high-resolution maps of a diverse set of gender-disaggregated indicators of relevance for women’s welfare, from culturally diverse low- and middle-income settings. These will be built upon a combination of GPS-located household survey data and satellite-derived datasets within a Bayesian geostatistical mapping approach, producing, high-resolution (1 km x 1km) gridded datasets of indicators of key relevance to women’s welfare that will be made freely available.

You will:
-Develop the spatial statistical methods used to produce the high resolution maps
-Manage the gridded spatial covariate layers and household survey data underlying the map production approaches.
-Regularly disseminate findings by contributing to the preparation of publication materials for refereed journals, presenting results at conferences, or exhibiting work at other appropriate events.

You will have either a PhD/MSc in a computational/quantitative discipline, or relevant industry experience and a willingness to travel occasionally for overseas meetings.
The position is available from 5 January 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Andrew Tatem via email [log in to unmask]

The closing date for this vacancy is 19 January 2015.

Application procedure:
You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
