Hi Kevin,
Where I worked before, as 16 year olds were able to sign consent forms for
medical treatment, they were considered able to sign for D & A tests.
Interestingly enough, we did find several who tested positive for cannabis.
On one occasion , a young man attended our department for testing, He
appeared high as a kite, to coin a phrase. He was tested and the cannabis
and opiates tests immediately showed evidence of the presence of those
drugs. After a call to the NMC, I reported the findings immediately to the
health and safety officer at the young man's company, rather than waiting
for the confirmatory laboratory tests.
Kind regards,
David Woodley

Hi
Any thoughts on doing D&A tests for 16 years olds (apprentices joining
company). Are they legally able to consent?
Company policy is clear all new starters are subject to new starter D&A
tests…. Nothing about minimum age.
