Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship in Computer Science at the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. The start date is 1st March 2015 (subject to negotiation).
Project information
The research is in the area of sketch recognition of digital ink diagrams. The goal of this project is to automatically derive the conceptual model of digital ink diagrams, more specifically to improve high-level recognisers to provide automated, robust, and accurate recognition of a variety of sketch domains. A thorough investigation of techniques will be conducted including the use of machine learning techniques.
People regularly use many different kinds of diagrams. Diagrams are as likely to be drawn on a tablet or a PC as on a whiteboard or the back of an envelope, however, computers can’t understand diagrams the way people can. By helping computers to understand what briefly sketched diagrams actually mean, advanced functions can be added to software. The key is accurate and automated recognition of the sketch. People will be able to draw quick diagrams such as transport networks, chemical structures, or the design of a phone app, and computers will be able to understand and work with those diagrams seamlessly. These advances in sketch recognition have the potential for wider implications in related areas such as annotation, touch, gesture, and scene recognition.
Financial Support
The studentship is for three years and includes a stipend of $25,000 NZD per year and tuition fees.
Applicant Requirements
Applicants are expected to have a first-class Masters or Honours degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. The studentship is available to domestic and international applicants. Programming experience and excellent analytical and presentational skills, along with a demonstrable interest in the research topic, are essential. Experience in pattern recognition or machine learning is an advantage.
