Postgraduate research skills training
Dear All,
What are the essential skills needed for excellent humanities research using archival collections? The National Archives is delighted to offer postgraduate students a programme of workshops, seminars and lectures designed to explore this question.
Types of session
The programme will explain how our collections have developed, how they can be accessed and interpreted, and how the structure and content of manuscripts can be made relevant to a wide range of humanities research subjects.
The skills and knowledge emerging from this programme will be valid for all types of research in archives and research libraries.
The programme is set out in three levels:
• a records introduction day to highlight the research potential of The National Archives' collections to students thinking about applying for a PhD studentship
• a research skills and methodology day, focusing on practical ways that students can make the best use of their research time in the archives
• document workshops - in-depth modules held over three days that provide detailed research guidance and practical exercises related to key collections and topics
Research areas
The programme is organised chronologically, with sessions covering:
• Early modern
• Medieval
• Modern British
• Modern overseas
Although its primarily focus is on historical research, the elements are designed to be inter-disciplinary. We are also introducing special sessions for art students as the first of several strands focussed on specific disciplines and related archival sources.
Open days
Research open days are free, with spaces limited to 30 places per session on a first come-first served basis. Each of our doctoral training partners will have places reserved per session. We will announce further sessions at each level in response to demand as necessary.
