HSL B5 COMPUTER SCIENTIST
Directorate : Health and Safety Laboratory
Location : Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 9JN
Salary : The salary range for this post is between £23,657 and £27,837, depending on relevant experience and skills.
The post
To carry out research and support work in the area of Computer / Data Science within Health and Safety and other areas contributing to projects for Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and external customers to time, cost and customer satisfaction, whilst complying with health, safety, environment and quality standards. The successful candidate will join an expanding team working on innovative projects to build business intelligence within government.
As a developing member of the team the successful candidate will assist in Computer Science analysis and application development. Activities will include carrying out research and support work in the areas of Data Science analysis and development of solutions for clients. This will include the following:
Providing Data / Computer Science analysis and expertise for a wide range of projects
Delivering bespoke technical Data / Computer Science solutions for customers by helping to provide application development expertise
Technically contributing to scientific projects and teams
Assist in technical innovation to help build the teams reputation.
Publicising and promoting the Spacial Intelligence and Knowledge Analysis Team (SIKAT) team work areas and helping to increase the customer base.
Assisting with the preparation of proposals for research and support work for HSE and external customers;
Liaising with colleagues in Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), HSE and externally.
Contributing to the writing of papers and the presentation of research at conferences and seminars.
Pro-actively helping to develop the range of services offered by the SIKAT team.
Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of this post will be to provide scientific support in the area of Computer Science analysis expertise, and to assist with the design, development and management of solutions for clients including HSL, HSE and external customers. This will include:
Providing Data / Computer Science expertise to help deliver solutions to real world problems for a range of clients.
Assist in a wide range of government projects linking large datasets to provide operational intelligence.
Assist in software development to expose and visualize linked data and intelligence.
Contributing to the expertise that the Unit can offer to external customers and to develop HSL's reputation in the field of data analysis, visualisation and application development.
Assisting in Computer Science application development support for a wide variety of projects within the SIKAT team
Liaising with colleagues in the wider Mathematical Sciences Unit.
Making a personal contribution to the scientific work of the unit by ensuring that specialist knowledge remains up to date.
The post will also include contributing to project teams, including:
Providing technical input
Delivering technical project tasks to time, quality and cost
Contributing to the response to customer requirements
Preparing project proposals and putting together project teams with project managers and the team leader
It will also including working with project managers to ensure delivery of projects and liaising with the SIKAT team leader and other MSU colleagues.

Personal Requirements
Relevant qualifications required:
Essential:-
Good (2:2 or above) honours degree in Computer Science or a related subject.
Desirable:-
Higher degree in a related subject
You must be able to demonstrate the following Job Related Expertise (JRE);
Essential:
Detailed experience of a relational database eg. SQL server, MySQL, Postgresql etc.
Experience in creating high quality software in at least one language eg. C#, Python, JAVA, Javascript.
Experience of extracting, matching, cleaning and manipulating large datasets to solve problems
Desirable:
Data mining experience
You must also be able to demonstrate the following competencies;
