ESRC Seminar Entrepreneurship and homes: policy and practice

BIS Conference Centre, 1 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0ET,
Thursday 15th January, 2015, 10.00am-4.30pm (registration from 9.30)

Attendance at this event is free. To register for this seminar please go to:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/esrc-seminar-series-entrepreneurship-and-homes-policy-and-practice-tickets-14442950253

This seminar will explore the practice and policy issues that emerge from the increasing use of homes as spaces that incubate, house and grow business activity. Through contributions from academics and practitioners, this seminar will discuss the opportunities and constraints for developing home based entrepreneurship, by examining critically the different impacts of regulation, housing types and design, technology, planning, employment and finance. The seminar will consider the extent to which existing policy thinking needs to be refashioned across a range of policy spheres, including business and innovation, communities and local development, housing and sustainable urban and rural development, to nurture the positive benefits of a growing home based business sector.

Programme:

Home-based businesses in Scotland - Dr Darja Reuschke and Professor Colin Mason (University of St Andrews & University of Glasgow)

Developing the policy agenda for HBBs – speaker from BIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills)

Policy priorities: the view from HBBs - Emma Jones (Enterprise Nation)

Rural home: a woman’s place to set up and nurture her own business venture – Professor Pooran Wynarczyk (University of Newcastle)

Tax compliance behaviour and home based businesses – Professor Colin Williams (University of Sheffield)

The governance of home-based work: lessons from Tokyo and Dharavi – Dr Frances Holliss (London Metropolitan University)

The entrepreneurial home; the home as a service – Helena Polati Trippe (Royal College of Art)

Employing workers in micro enterprises – Professor Jason Heyes & Dr Tim Vorley (University of Sheffield)

Developing home based business data – Jacqui Jones (ONS)

About this seminar series

The ESRC funded Seminar Series Entrepreneurship in Homes and Neighbourhoods aims to advance knowledge on the roles of homes and neighbourhoods in firm formation and entrepreneurship and inform/influence enterprise and housing policy and practice. By gaining a better understanding of the significance of the embeddedness of entrepreneurship in homes and neighbourhoods we seek to critically advance the view that entrepreneurial activities are local assets that require more attention in enterprise, neighbourhood and housing research and policy, and open up new perspectives for economic growth.

The seminar series is a joint initiative by researchers from the Universities of St Andrews, Middlesex, Glasgow, and Delft. The organisers comprise: Dr Darja Reuschke (St Andrews); Prof Stephen Syrett (Middlesex); Prof Colin Mason (Glasgow); Prof Maarten van Ham (Delft University of Technology) and Prof Duncan Maclennan (St Andrews)
