All,
At yesterday's meeting we brought up with question of linking to open
resources during validation. At the time it made sense to me, but as I
tried to write it up for the shapes list, I couldn't figure out what the
question is.
The situation is this: you receive data with, say, LCNA URIs. You want
to validate that you do indeed have a label for your system use.
Presumably at this point you would access id.loc.gov and retrieve the
appropriate label.
Here's where I get lost.
If you are going to index that label in your local system, you need to
make a copy of it in your closed world. In this case, I would expect
that validation takes place after this function, and if after retrieval
you don't have a label, then you have an error. This tells me that
validation is post-retrieval, and that the resolution step must take
place before the validation step.
(This also brings up lots of questions about updating, but that's
another can of worms)
If my assumption about the pre-validation stage is true, then I don't
think we have a question for the W3C group. If it isn't, please suggest
another scenario.
Thanks,
kc
