Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies Annual Lecture, Tuesday 16th December 2014
‘Putting archives in the frame. Profile raising at the National Gallery Archive’
Alan Crookham will consider how the National Gallery Archive's profile has been raised in recent decades to all its stakeholders: curatorial staff and management, the research and professional archival communities, and the visiting public. He will discuss the history and development of the archive since the appointment of the first professional archivist in 1994, and how it now sits within the Gallery's overall strategic framework. He will look at specific examples of collaborative projects, research-led, and relying on professional best-practice, projects which have both increased the archive's visibility and led to a greater exploitation of its unique - and sometimes unexpected - holdings.
Alan was appointed Research Centre Manager at the National Gallery in August 2013 after eight years as Archivist. He formerly worked at the Tate, and at the University of Warwick. His book, 'The National Gallery: An Illustrated History', was published by Yale University Press in 2010.
The lecture will be followed by wine and festive nibbles.
