PRACforum Delhi
is happy to invite you to a
Curator's Forum Workgroup session in Kochi
14th December, 2014 | 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
Yusuf Gallery, Jew Town, Fort Kochi
This exercise, initiated by PRACforum Delhi (Professionals in Art and Curation), will bring together curators and art professionals from across the country and beyond to discuss issues related to the practical and the critical aspects of their practice. The session will benefit from the presence of a large number of national and international curators and art professionals ;who will be in the city for the opening of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale..
Built around four main themes, the aim of the workgroup is to create a social yet professional space for discussion where curators present in Kochi will interact, network and exchange perspectives and experiences. The model adopted for it is inspired by a workshop held at Sarai/CSDS (Delhi; 2012) by the research unit CRUMB (Curatorial Resources for Upstart Media Bliss) where critical discussion was triggered by practical experiences of both presenters and participants.
The workgroups will open with a short introduction by Marialaura Ghidini <http://pracforumdelhi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6659c139fe01357952848f43c&id=dc0ed4689d&e=292782230e> (independent curator and researcher at CRUMB) and Julia Villaseñor<http://pracforumdelhi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6659c139fe01357952848f43c&id=fbf7f504cf&e=292782230e> (curator and PRACforum Delhi active member), which will also briefly outline the previous activities of the Delhi; group. The participants will then break up into four groups, each of which will deal with one of the themes presented below. The participants of each group will be invited to share their experiences, knowledge and questions arising from their discussions. Each discussion, will be convened by a voluntary member of PRACforum, who will aid the conversation so that it becomes an opportunity to learn from each other. After a short break, the conveners of each group will outline the main points that emerged during the discussion and further comments will be invited from other groups in order to open up the themes and the outcomes of the conversation to everyone.
This format, merging practice with theory and critical thinking, also aims to instigate the creation of a national community engaging with the larger artistic and curatorial landscape.
The themes proposed are:
* The Age of Exchange. Current and future trajectories.
Curating before and after the Kochi Biennale. Where do we come from and where are we going? A discussion about the effects that the biennial is having, if at all, on the positioning and international understanding of the Indian art scene. Where does India stand now outside its borders?
* Curatorial cartography of India. How to network?
A look at the tensions between local and national artistic and curatorial scenes, considering the fragmentation of the artistic landscape as a positive aspect.
If it were to be a network, how would we do it? Can there be a Pan Indian curator's forum?
* Quid of Indian curatorial studies and practice.
What is the state of curatorial studies? Where are they going and where do they happen?
With a stress on the relationship between theory and practice; the discussion will revolve around the why and how of curatorial studies and practice-based research inside and outside academia.
* Curatorial Modes: Rethinking Exhibition Formats across Disciplines.
Looking at the ecology of the curatorial today, how do we discuss and adopt curatorial modes of work and models emerging from different fields of work? Re-thinking exhibition formats through the experience of peers and other professionals within and outside of the gallery/museum system.
