This autumn the British Academy hosts series of debates, supported by the Barrow Cadbury Trust, across the UK looking at immigration, and how it affects Britain culturally, politically and economically. The Debates bring together evidence and insight to illuminate some of the biggest questions facing society today and demonstrate the importance of humanities and social science research in addressing these issues.
The panels of academics, commentators and leading figures will explore different aspects of immigration, and seek to distinguish reality from myth in this emotive and often controversial topic in an increasingly diverse Britain. The economic cost and benefit of immigration to the UK is widely discussed, but what is the reality? Do workers from overseas fill skills shortages? What is the evidence of the economic impact immigration has on housing and employment as well as access to education and welfare facilities at a local level? Is the overall effect of this impact negative of positive?
