Hi Stephen,
No dedicated OPAC, we have two dedicated RDS (Primo) PCs for walk in access (WATER). Primo has a link to the OPAC so it can be found.
Yes Primo.
In Primo, users can search everything.
If RVC users access the OPAC from the dedicated machines they can do renewals, view account details and place holds by logging in.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Alison

Subject: [lis-e-resources] Dedicated OPACs and Resource Discovery Questions
Hi All - we currently offer several standalone dedicated OPAC terminals within our two libraries. The OPAC searches our current LMS catalogue which contains our print and electronic holdings, but are locked down so the users cannot leave the LMS space e.g. therefore users cannot follow a link to the full text of an ejournal. I guess their true raison d'etre is to simply allow users to see if a book is on the shelf, and inform the user where to locate it. Standard stuff really, or is it?
We are in the process of purchasing a resource discovery system (RDS), and are wondering whether to replace the current LMS OPAC with the newer resource discovery interface. Obviously our local holdings will be loaded in to the RDS, so can be found along with all our other subscribed to content. My questions are:
- Do other Libraries still offer dedicated OPACs?
- If so, have they replaced the traditional LMS OPAC interface with a newer RDS one?
- If a RDS is used, do you restrict the searches to physical Library stock, or do you let users search everything?
- Do you allow users to perform actions such as renewals, viewing account details etc, which require an individual login, on the dedicated OPACs?
At the moment we are looking at how much traffic we get from our OPACs, and the sorts of "actions" our users perform e.g. simple searches, renewals etc. It would be interesting to hear what other academic Libraries do, and any thoughts/ideas?
Many Thanks, Stephen
Stephen Graham
