MIGRATION AND ASYLUM (FOUNDATION COURSE)

This e-learning course introduces participants to basic conceptual and theoretical issues concerning migration, including ways to distinguish between different forms of migration. The course will discuss historical and current trends and figures, the main international, regional and national policy and operational approaches and the challenges to addressing migration.
After taking this course, participants will be able to:
. analyse the terms and concepts used in migration debates;
. understand how to use available data and information sources on migration;
. examine migration and asylum issues from different theoretical, political and geographical perspectives.

Week 1. Introduction to Main Concepts in Migration Discourse
Week 2. Global Trends in Migration and Data Sources
Week 3. Forced versus Voluntary Migration
Week 4. The Regulation of International Migration - Legal and Policy Frameworks
Week 5. International Migration and Social Justice
Week 6. Migration and Development
Costs: Tuition fee for participants: US$575 (after 1 December 2014: US$ 675); tuition for auditors: US$ 215 (US$ 250 after 1 December 2014).
Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation.
