CUNY Phonology Forum: Conference on Multilingual Phonology
CUNY, New York, USA, 15-16 January 2015
http://www.cunyphonologyforum.net/

2nd Call for Papers
Extended deadline: 24 November 2014

The CUNY Phonology Forum is devoted to the promotion of healthy discussion and fruitful pursuit of foundational questions in phonology. One of the Forum's strategies for developing useful discussions is to organize the conferences around specific topics within phonology, and to invite and encourage participation from scholars who look at each topic from a variety of perspectives. This year's topic will explore formal, functional, experimental, and computational approaches to the topic of multilingual phonology, including acquisition and code-switching.

Invited Speaker:
Ellen Broselow, Stony Brook University

Papers are invited in any area of phonology, with special focus on multilingualism and sound patterns in the context of multiple language competence and use. The view of phonology is broad, and encompasses diverse areas of cognitive science, including formal linguistics, language acquisition, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, phonetics, and psychology. Diversity in methods is also encouraged: formal, functional, experimental, and computational approaches to phonology are welcome.

By ''multilingual phonology'' we mean sound patterns that relate to more than one language. This theme is meant to encompass: phonological acquisition in multiple languages or in a non-primary language; perception of sound patterns in multilinguals; loanword phonology; contact phonology; contact-induced sound change; phonological aspects of code-switching; phonological impairments in multilinguals; phonological interference in multilinguals; and the phonological effects of world languages on other languages.

Submission Guidelines:

We invite submissions for both oral presentations and posters. Oral presentations will be 20 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion. All submissions will be considered for both oral and poster presentation, unless 'poster only' is indicated.

Anonymous abstracts should be one A4/letter page (12pt font) with a second page for references, data and/or illustrations. Abstracts should be emailed as an attachment (PDF format) to [log in to unmask] no later than 23:59 EDT on 24 November 2014 (extended deadline).

In the body of the email, include title of the paper, name of the author(s) and affiliation. If you wish your abstract to be considered for poster presentation only, please also indicate this in your email.

Important Dates:

24 November 2014: Extended deadline for abstracts submission
1 December 2014: Notification of acceptance
15-16 January 2015: Conference on Multilingual Phonology

Interspeech 2015
Dresden, Germany, 6-10 September 2015
http://interspeech2015.org/

INTERSPEECH is the world’s largest and most comprehensive conference on the science and technology of spoken language processing. INTERSPEECH conferences emphasize interdisciplinary approaches addressing all aspects of speech science and technology, ranging from basic theories to applications. In addition to regular oral and poster sessions, the conference will also feature plenary talks by internationally renowned experts, tutorials, special sessions, show & tell sessions, and exhibits. A number of satellite events will take place immediately before and after the conference.

INTERSPEECH 2015 will be organized around the theme Speech beyond Speech: Towards a Better Understanding of the Most Important Biosignal, which acknowledges the fact that speech is the most important biosignal humans can produce and perceive. It is evident that not all characteristics of speech are already fully understood. We therefore encourage contributions that analyze and model speech as a biosignal in a broad understanding, e.g. for extracting information about the speaker, for identifying processes leading to speech production, or for generating speech signals with specific bio-characteristics. Contributions to all other areas of speech science and technology are also welcome.

Please follow the details which will be published on our website and through our twitter channel @interspeech2015 https://twitter.com/interspeech2015

Paper submissions must conform to the format defined in the paper preparation guidelines and provided in the authors’ kit on the INTERSPEECH 2015 website, along with the Call for Papers. Optionally, authors may submit additional files, such as multimedia files, which will be included in the official conference proceedings. Authors must declare that their contributions are original and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere (e.g. another conference, workshop, or journal). Papers must be submitted via the online paper submission system. Full paper submission deadline is on Friday 20 March 2015 midnight (11:59pm) GMT, after which updates of the pdf file will be permitted until 27 March 2015 midnight GMT but the title, author, abstract and topics cannot be changed. There will be no extension of paper submission deadlines. The working language of the conference is English, and papers must be written in English, too.

(2) Call for Special Sessions
Deadline: 30 November 2014

Submissions of Special Sessions & Challenges proposals are encouraged for INTERSPEECH 2015, covering interdisciplinary topics and/or important new emerging areas of interest related to the main conference topics. Submissions related to the special focus of the conference, Speech beyond Speech: Towards a Better Understanding of the Most Important Biosignal, are particularly welcome. Apart from a particular theme, special sessions can have a format different from a regular session. Each special session or challenge proposal should contain the following information:
• Title of the proposed session
• Names and affiliations of organizers (including brief bio and contact information)
• Up to five bullet points on what makes the session special (can include, but is not limited to, technical aspects, format of the session, expected outcomes, people involved)
• An introduction (maximum 1 page) stating the importance of the topic and the objectives of the proposed session
• Tentative/confirmed list of papers or at least target contributors
• Additional or non-standard resources (e.g. data, equipment, poster stands, etc.) required for organizing the special session
Proposals should clearly describe the topic and explain why it cannot be covered appropriately in regular sessions. Additionally, the intended format for the session should be clearly indicated (panel, posters, etc.).
Proposals are evaluated by the Organizing Committee based on relevance and significance of the topic. Papers for approved Special Sessions have to be submitted following the same schedule and procedure as regular papers; the papers will undergo the same review process by anonymous and independent reviewers. Special session organizers will be involved in the reviewer assignment and in the final decisions.
Challenges are “special” special sessions. The requirements are the same across special sessions and challenges as stated above; however, for challenges, additional edge conditions might exist such as a baseline to compare own results with, established by the challenge organizers. The ComParE challenge that has been organized at Interspeech since 2009 might be taken as blueprint; of course, other structures and topics are welcome as well.
Prospective organizers are invited to submit a proposal via email to the Special Session Chairs, Anton Batliner and Björn Schuller before November 30, 2014. Please do not hesitate to ask before submitting your proposal if something is not fully clear to you. Notification of pre-selection is scheduled for December 15, 2014; final acceptance can be expected shortly after paper acceptance/rejection, depending on the number of accepted papers submitted for a special session or a challenge.

(3) Call for Show and Tell
Deadline: 17 April 2015

INTERSPEECH is the world’s largest and most comprehensive conference on the science and technology of spoken language processing. Show & Tell is a special event organized during the conference. Participants are given the opportunity to demonstrate their most recent progress or developments, and interact with the conference attendees in an informal way, such as a poster, a mock-up, a demo, or any adapted format of their own choice. These contributions must highlight the innovative side of the concept and may relate to a regular paper.

Each accepted proposal paper will be allocated two pages in the conference proceedings. Show & Tell demonstrations will be presented in a dedicated time slot; each presentation space will include one poster board, one table for mock-ups, as well as a wireless internet connection and a Central European standard power supply. Demonstrations should be based on innovations and fundamental research in areas of speech production, perception, communication, or speech and language technology and systems. All submissions will be peer-reviewed. Reviewers will judge the originality, significance, quality, and clarity of the proposed demonstration. At least one author of each accepted submission must register for and attend the conference, and demonstrate the system during the Show & Tell sessions.

Paper Submission
Show & Tell proposal papers must be in English and adhere to the requirements, format and style specified in the INTERSPEECH 2015 call for papers published on the conference’s webpage, except that the maximum length is limited to 2 pages, including references.
All papers submitted must be original contributions. Authors are invited to submit supporting data files, such as demonstration videos, to be included in the conference proceedings if their Show & Tell paper is accepted. Authors are allowed to include links to web pages in the pdf proposal.

Due date for Show & Tell proposal papers is 17 April 2015. The papers should be submitted to the following e-mail address: [log in to unmask]

(4) Call for Tutorials
Deadline: 20 March 2015

INTERSPEECH conferences are attended by researchers with a long-term track-record in speech sciences and technology, as well as by early-stage researchers or researchers interested in a new domain within the INTERSPEECH areas. With the current edition of INTERSPEECH, we seek to specifically reflect different audiences in the choice of tutorials, where it will clearly be indicated what prior knowledge the audience should have. As a consequence, we encourage proposals for tutorials addressing introductory topics or advanced topics in an introductory style, and tutorials targeting experienced researchers who want to dig deeper into a given new topic.
Tutorials may introduce an uprising area of speech-related research, or present an overview of an important more established area.
The tutorials can be of either three hours or six hours duration. The tutorials are expected to cover the state-of-the-art of the proposed topics rather than to primarily present the authors own research.
INTERSPEECH 2015 will be organized around the theme Speech beyond Speech: Towards a Better Understanding of the Most Important Biosignal, which acknowledges the fact that speech is the most important biosignal humans can produce and perceive. As a consequence, we especially encourage tutorials from fields that are directly related with this theme. Of course the call is not restricted to the conference theme, and open to any kind of tutorial related with speech science and technology.

Tutorial Proposal Submission
Proposals for the INTERSPEECH 2015 tutorials should be up to 4 pages long. Proposal submissions must conform to the format defined in the tutorial proposal preparation guidelines and provided in the authors’ kit on the INTERSPEECH 2015 website, along with the Call for Tutorials.
Tutorial proposal submission deadline is on Friday 20 March 2015 midnight (11:59pm) GMT. There will be no extension of deadlines. The working language of the conference is English, and proposals must be written in English, too.
All proposals should be submitted to [log in to unmask]

Preliminary Tutorial Proposal Template
1. Tutorial Title
2. Duration [3 hours – 1 session, 6 hours – 2 sessions]
3. Presenter(s) [Name and Affiliation]
4. Description of the proposal [1-2 pages description plus a few relevant references and any webpages/material useful for reviewing the proposal]
5. Explanation of relevance of the proposed tutorial [0.5-1 page]
6. Description of Presentation format [e.g. one or more presenters, video conferencing or other media, etc.]
7. Special equipment required for the tutorial
8. Contact Information [email, Telephone]
9. Biography of Presenter(s)
10. Key Publications of Presenter(s) on the tutorial topic
11. Target Audience [e.g. new researchers to the field, research students, specialists of adjacent fields, etc.]
12. Estimated number of participants, possibly first names of interested researchers
13. Provided accompanying material [handouts, storage devices with media, etc.]
14. Other considerations/comments

The event will be staged in the recently built Maritim International Congress Center (ICD) in Dresden, the capital of Saxony. It is located in the heart of Europe, easily reached via Berlin or Dresden airports, and will offer a great deal of history and culture to INTERSPEECH 2015 delegates.

Evolution of Phonetic Capabilities: Causes, Constraints and Consequences
Satellite meeting of the 18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS2015)
Glasgow, Scotland, 12 August 2015
http://www.icphs2015.info/Meetings.aspx

Call for Papers
Deadline 16 February 2015

In recent years, there has been a resurgence in research in the evolution of language and speech. New techniques in computational and mathematical modelling, experimental paradigms, brain and vocal tract imaging, corpus analysis and animal studies, as well as new archeological evidence, have allowed us to address questions relevant to the evolution of our phonetic capabilities

This workshop requests contributions from researchers which address the emergence of our phonetic capabilities. We are interested in empirical evidence from models and experiments which explore evolutionary pressures causing the emergence of our phonetic capabilities, both in biological and cultural evolution, and the consequences biological constraints will have on processes of cultural evolution and vice versa. Contributions are welcome to cover not only the evolution of our physical ability to produce structured signals in different modalities, but also cognitive or functional processes that have a bearing on the emergence of phonemic inventories. We are also interested in contributions which look at the interaction between the two areas mentioned above which are often dealt with separately in the field, that is the interaction between physical constraints imposed by a linguistic modality, and cognitive constraints born from learning biases and functional factors, and the consequences this interaction will have on emerging linguistic systems and inventories.

Contributions must fit the same submission requirements on the main ICPhS 2015 call for papers page.

Contributions can be sent as an attachment to hannah (at) ai.vub.ac.be by 16 February 2015

Post-doc A: Longitudinal acquisition of FEs by L2 learners
PhD A: Comprehension of FEs by L2 learners -
http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla-vacancy-phd-a/
PhD B: Production of FEs by L2 learners -
http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla-vacancy-phd-b/
Post-doc B: A computational model of FE processing -
http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla-vacancy-post-doc-b/

In the ISLA project, we investigate how L2 learners acquire and use formulaic expressions (FEs). Subjects receive focused teaching to learn FEs and are tested experimentally to measure FE acquisition, comprehension, and production. Questions addressed are: How does specific training contribute to FE acquisition in L2? How do L2 learners comprehend and produce FEs? How can we model FE processing by L2 learners? Can we exploit the theoretical insights based on novel findings to improve L2 teaching methods?

Research Engineer -- Physiological Data Acquisition and Processing in Speech Production
LABEX Empirical Foundations of Linguistics (EFL)
Sorbonne Paris Cité
Paris, France
http://www.labex-efl.org/?q=en

Application deadline: 8 December 2014

The LabEx EFL (Empirical Foundations of Linguistics) seeks an engineer for a 12 month long, full time position (http://www.labex-efl.org/?q=fr/accueil).

Description of the Position
The post holder will be responsible for the elaboration of algorithms for signal processing and for analysing heterogeneous data flux extracted from acoustic, articulatory and physiological synchronized data (Ultrasound, camera for lips, Electroglottography (EGG), sound microphone, nasal piezoelectric, aerodynamic data and laryngeal imaging) to study speech and singing.

Context
Voice and speech assessment is a growing field and requires multiple instrumentations. Clinical phonetics and medical sciences share the same instrumentations to explore vocal function at the physiological, acoustical and behavioural level. Physiological and articulatory data are still scarce but complementary to acoustic cues. Our aim is to study the complexity of speech production mechanisms as a whole, considering the coordination of phonatory and articulatory behaviour in different phonation settings.

Candidate's Duty
The successful candidate will undertake experiments that consist in defining parameters for acoustical and physiological data collection and designing analysis methods for physiological data captured with different instruments (lingual Ultrasound, camera for lips, electroglottography…) that can be coupled and synchronized to better reflect the articulatory complexity of speech production.

Candidate's Requirements
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Engineering in signal processing (audio and video) with, if possible, some knowledge of experimental phonetics and speech sciences.
- Computer knowledge for signal processing (script, C++, Matlab…)
- Experience in the acoustic analysis of speech
- Experience in articulatory investigation will be an advantage.
- Spoken and written English is strongly recommended.

Application Deadline: December 8th 2014 (midnight, Paris time)
Interviews: selected candidates will be interviewed from the 10th to the 12th of December 2014.
Start of Contract: February 2nd, 2015
Salary: With respect to the University rules (around 2500€ gross salary)
Job Location: Laboratoire de Phonétique et de Phonologie (LPP), 19 rue des Bernardins, 75005 Paris

Please email your CV, a motivation letter, and one letter of recommendation to Lise Crevier Buchman and Martine Adda-Decker at the application emails lise.buchman (at) numericable.fr ; martine.adda-decker (at) univ-paris3.fr

IPA membership for 2015: old costs, new benefits

The cost of joining/renewing membership in the International Phonetic Association for 2015 will remain the same as in the past – 45 EUR for Full and 22.50 EUR for Student members.

As always, a benefit of membership is a subscription to the Association’s Journal. For 2015, all members will receive print issues of the Journal, as before. In addition, all members will have online access to the Journal – not only to the 2015 volume, but also to all the back issues, back to 1971. Many members already have this access through their institutions, but now all members will have it, via the members-only part of our forthcoming new website. This combination of print+online access at no extra charge will be offered only for 2015; beginning in 2016, we plan to introduce different membership fees for different kinds of Journal subscriptions.

Another benefit of membership in 2015 is a reduced registration fee for the upcoming International Congress of Phonetic Sciences, to be held in Glasgow 10-14 August. While the registration fees for the Congress have not yet been announced, IPA members will receive a discount of 30 GBP for Full members and 20 GBP for Student members. In order to receive this discount, membership dues for 2015 must be paid by February 1.

We do ask that you wait to renew or join until January. We hope that 2015 memberships will be handled through the new website, and it is not yet available.
