Hi Helen,
Thanks for your email. Yes, this certainly is possible however I was told that everyone had managed to install Java, etc. I just wanted to find out (at the request of the academic) whether anyone else had experienced any other major issues using chat off campus. I think possibly not, so I'm inclined to think that the issues were related to Java / pop-up blockers as we thought.
Thanks again for your response!
Kind regards,

You mention that the students are on placement in schools - is it possible that the IT systems in schools are locked down and as such do not allow, for example, the ability to download software such as chat clients?

Hi All,
We have an academic who is using ‘Chat’ in his course to have a group session with his students who are all on placements in Schools. They had lots of problems accessing the chat room even though we had reminded them to ensure their Java was up to date. I also suggested to the academic that he should remind his students to ensure their pop-up blockers are deactivated on their browsers in case this was preventing them from accessing the chat room. He said that his students are very tech-savvy so will have considered these issues and feels that there must be other issues related to Chat use outside of the University.
Has anyone else experienced any other issues with accessing ‘Chat’ off-campus, or does anyone have any useful guidelines that they issue to staff wanting to do this?
Any advice would be gratefully received!
Thanks!
