“Lineage, Culture and Local Society in the Jiangnan Region in the Ming-Qing dynasties” (in Chinese)
The Lower Yangzi region has played a prominent role in China’s economic and cultural history during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It still influences China profoundly in the modern age. During the Ming and Qing, the Jiangnan area referred to the prefectures of Suzhou, Taicang, Changzhou, Songjiang, Jiaxing, Hangzhou, and Huzhou. In the late imperial period, lineages were widespread in this region, but they differed significantly from lineages in South China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, because of the prosperous economic growth and cultural development in the area, local lineages showed a very strong interest in culture. I propose that these many lineages belonged to a type of “cultural lineages” (文化世族) who were mainly active in two areas: family tradition (家风) and family learning (家学). They took education and social responsibility very seriously. Their influence on the local communities that surrounded them was through cultural achievements and moral enlightenment, and they were able to shape the larger cultural trends in the region.
