PhD studentships, University of Leeds Clinical Trials Research Unit
Leeds University Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) is an NCRI accredited and UKCRC registered Clinical Trials Unit. The CTRU is regarded as an impressive and inspirational trials unit by NIHR NETSCC, providing the experience, expertise and infrastructure necessary for the promotion and conduct of high quality randomised clinical trials, underpinned by methodological research. The CTRU is the third largest in the UK with approximately 150 staff, including 20-30 statisticians working on 100+ projects. They participate in an active programme of seminars, a journal club and joint research meetings with the Academic Unit of Health Economics. A weekly methodology discussion group provides impetus for development of methodological work.
The CTRU has funding for 2 full time studentships over 3 years (part-time over 5 years also considered). Funding includes University of Leeds post-graduate fees, a stipend of £14,400pa, and a training and conference budget of £2,500pa. Applicants should have a BSc honours degree, class 2.1 or above, in mathematics, statistics or a related discipline with a high quantitative content, and ideally an MSc in a relevant subject. Basic statistical and project-specific training will be augmented by attendance at appropriate APTS courses in the first year. All students will be based at the CTRU.
Specific areas of methodological research include:
1. Mathematical modelling relating response durations to biological parameters in cancer trials
2. Appropriate analyses of cut-points when investigating the effects of continuous variables
3. Use of multiple data sources in health service policy decisions
4. Impact of phase II trial design parameters on screening of new treatments for phase III trials
5. Measuring adherence in trials of complex interventions
6. Efficient clinical trial analysis using routine NHS data
Applications should be sent to Prof. Linda Sharples, Clinical Trials Research Unit, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, by post or e-mail ([log in to unmask]) the end of 28th November 2015.
